The basics
A smart light is an LED you can switch, dim and schedule from an app or a voice assistant, either directly over Wi-Fi or through a hub.
Bulbs, strips and fixtures
Bulbs fit your existing sockets (B22 bayonet, E27 and E14 screw). LED strips run along a surface for indirect light; downlights and ceiling lights replace the fixture itself.
Colour and brightness
Brightness is measured in lumens, not watts. Colour temperature runs from warm white (around 2700K) to daylight (6500K); colour-changing lights add the full spectrum.
How they connect
Wi-Fi lights need no hub. Zigbee, Thread and Matter lights use a hub or bridge for faster, steadier control, and work with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home.

Bulb, strip or fixture?
Start with what you're replacing. Screw or bayonet fitting: a smart bulb. A run of LED under cabinets or shelving: a strip. Recessed ceiling lighting or anything hardwired: a downlight or wall light, which usually means an electrician for the swap.

Warm or cool white?
Warm white (around 2700K) suits bedrooms, living rooms and anywhere you want to relax. Cool white (5000K and up) suits kitchens, garages, home offices and outdoor security lighting, closer to daylight for focus and visibility. Colour-changing bulbs and strips let you switch between both, and everything else, from the app.

It depends on the protocol. Wi-Fi bulbs connect directly to your router. Zigbee and Thread devices need a compatible hub or border router (like a Hue Bridge or a Matter-capable speaker) for the most reliable mesh.
Budget per light rather than per house. White bulbs start at $19.95 and colour bulbs run to about $100, so a four-light living room is $80 to $400 depending on the range. Most people do one room, live with it for a few weeks, then do the next.
Yes, for anything on Zigbee, Thread or Matter. Those commands never leave your network, so app control, switches and automations keep working inside the house. What you lose is control from outside the house, and any voice assistant that routes through the cloud. Wi-Fi lights depend on the brand: some keep local control, others need the cloud for everything.
The bulb loses power, so app and voice control stop until the switch goes back on. Two fixes: leave the switch on and fit a battery-powered wall remote over it, or put the control in the switch instead of the bulb with a smart switch or relay.
Not for bulbs, LED strips or plug-in lights, which you install yourself. You do for anything wired into the mains: downlights, ceiling lights and wall lights have to be installed by a licensed electrician in Australia. If you're renting, stay with bulbs and strips.
No. A smart bulb dims itself, and a traditional dimmer chops the power feeding it, which causes flicker, buzzing and dropouts. Replace the dimmer with a standard switch, or with a smart switch if you still want dimming at the wall. Low-voltage downlights have the same problem at the transformer: the existing one often can't drive an LED cleanly, so it usually has to change too.
