An open kitchen and lounge in the evening, with pendant bulbs over the table, a strip light under the cabinets and a table lamp all on.

Control any group of lights from one wall switch

How it works

A Shelly i4 Gen3 sits behind a push-button switch. Each kind of press can run its own action on the i4: a push, a double push, a triple push or a long push. An action sends up to five commands straight to other Shelly devices over your Wi-Fi, so one push can dim the lounge to 20% and switch off the hallway.

The lights in the group need a Shelly. Any light already on a Shelly relay or dimmer works, and a Shelly Dimmer Gen4 puts one that isn't smart yet into the group.

Press it, and the i4 behind it tells the lights what to do.

The whole group changes together, in any room.

What it looks like on your phone

  • Every press. The i4's activity log lists each push and long push with its time.

  • Two actions, one button. A push runs Movie night and a long push runs All off, straight from the i4.

  • The lights follow. Hallway light's log shows it switching off on each Movie night and All off.

Step by step

How you'll set it up

Add the device to Wi-Fi from your phone, or straight from a browser.

  1. Fit the i4 behind the button

Live goes to L and neutral to N. The push button takes live on one side and connects to SW1 on the other.

  2. Add the i4 and set it to Button

Add the i4 in the Shelly app and name it after the room, such as Living room switch. Open its Settings (the cog at the foot of the menu), then Input settings, choose Button and tap Save. In the web interface, open the input, then Input settings, set the mode to Button and click Save.

  3. Set the lights for a push

Open Actions and tap Add action. Name it Movie night and tap Next twice. Under When, tap Button is pushed, then Next. Tap Add action from another device, pick a light and tap Next. For a dimmer, turn on Light State and choose On, then turn on Set Brightness property, set it to 20% and tap Save. Add the next light the same way (Hallway light, Control Output, Off) and tap Save, then Save again. In the web interface, open Actions, click Create action and set Event to Button push. Under Then do, click Add URL and add one per light: `http://` and the light's IP address, followed by `/rpc/light.set?id=0&on=true&brightness=20` for a dimmer at 20% or `/rpc/switch.set?id=0&on=false` for a relay. Then click Save.

  4. Switch them all off with a long push

Add a second action named All off. Under When, tap Button is long pushed, then tap Next. Add each light with Off, then tap Save. In the web interface, set Event to Button long push and add the same URLs ending `on=false`, then click Save.

  5. Check the actions

Actions now lists Movie night on Button is pushed and All off on Button is long pushed, each with two lights. A push sets the room and a long push switches it off. The web interface's Actions page shows the same two.

Frequently asked questions

Which should I use: the i4, a Shelly scene or Home Assistant?

If every light in the group is a Shelly, set it up on the i4: it works without the internet. A Shelly scene can reach more of your Shelly account but needs the internet. If Home Assistant runs your home, or the group includes other brands such as Philips Hue, use Home Assistant.

Do I need a push button rather than a normal switch?

Yes. A push, a double push and a long push all need a button that springs back. A normal rocker switch stays on or off, so it can only do one thing each way.

Does the switch box need a neutral?

Yes. The i4 is powered from live and neutral, so the box needs both.

Does it work if the internet drops out?

No. Shelly scenes run in Shelly's cloud. If you want the switch to keep working without the internet, set it up on the i4 instead.

How many lights can one press set?

Up to five commands per action, and each press type has its own action. For a bigger group, use a Shelly scene or Home Assistant.

Does it work while Home Assistant is down?

No. The automations run in Home Assistant, so the button does nothing until it's back.
