How much light do I need?
Brightness is measured in lumens, not watts. We've sorted globes into five bands so you can filter by how much light they actually put out, from a soft bedside glow to an outdoor floodlight. Here's what each band covers.

What does the IP rating mean?
An IP rating tells you how well a light is sealed against dust and water. The first number covers dust, the second covers water, and higher is better on both. Here's what each one can handle.

Match the light to the zone
Start with the job, not the brand. Floodlights wash a driveway or wall for security; spotlights pick out trees and garden beds; path and bollard lights edge walkways; festoon strings light a deck or pergola for entertaining; permanent eave lights trace the roofline for Christmas and parties. Most yards want two or three of these working together.
Work out how it is powered
Renting, or want it up this weekend? Plug-in, solar and battery fittings need no wiring and no electrician. For a permanent setup, hardwired floodlights and coach lights should go in by a licensed electrician to AS/NZS 3000, while low-voltage garden kits run off a single plug-pack transformer you can fit yourself. Pick a system you will actually use
Match the lights to the home you already run. Wi-Fi ranges like eufy, Govee and LIFX connect straight to your router and app, no hub needed. Philips Hue uses the Hue Bridge over Zigbee, which holds range better down the back of a long yard. To mix brands under one roof, choose Matter and control it from Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa.

Yes. Look for an IP65 rating or higher and they will handle rain, hose-down and full sun year-round. The detail people miss is heat and UV: cheap outdoor plastics fade and go brittle after a couple of Australian summers, so favour fittings with UV-stable housings and an aluminium body on floodlights.
Most do, but check the badge before you buy. Wi-Fi brands like eufy, Govee and LIFX work with Amazon Alexa and Google Home out of the box, and many now add Apple Home through Matter. Philips Hue works with all three, with the Hue Bridge giving the most reliable voice control.
Not for most brands. eufy, Govee, LIFX and Nanoleaf connect over Wi-Fi straight to their app, so there is nothing extra to buy. The Philips Hue outdoor range is the exception: it needs the Hue Bridge for full control, longer Zigbee range and reliable automations across a big yard.
It depends on how they connect. Wi-Fi lights need a usable signal where they are mounted, so a far fence or shed may need a mesh node or outdoor access point. Zigbee and Thread lights form a mesh that each fitting extends, so the more you add down the yard, the stronger the network gets.
Yes. Everything in our lighting range works with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings. Wi-Fi for the simplest setup, Zigbee or Thread for the cleanest mesh, Matter for the future-proof pick.
It depends on the protocol. Wi-Fi bulbs connect directly to your router. Zigbee and Thread devices need a compatible hub or border router (like a Hue Bridge or a Matter-capable speaker) for the most reliable mesh.
