Switches
Smart switches and plugs put lights and appliances you already own under app, voice and automation control, often without rewiring. Learn the difference between them, whether you need a neutral wire, and what to fit where.
Everything switches
Switches, plugs, dimmers and relays, one question at a time.
What is a dry contact?
A dry contact is a switch that carries no power of its own. It is how a mains-powered smart relay can open a garage door, and it is the spec that decides which Shelly module you need.
When do you need a neutral wire?
The light always needs a neutral. A plain wall switch never does. What sits between those two facts decides which smart switches you can buy, and what to do when there is no neutral at yours.
