What is Zigbee?
Zigbee is the low-power wireless mesh behind Philips Hue, Aqara and most smart sensors. Here is how it works, why it needs a hub, and where it sits next to Matter.
If you own a Philips Hue light or an Aqara sensor, you are already using Zigbee, most likely without knowing it. Zigbee is the low-power wireless language a lot of smart home devices use to talk to each other. It carries the small, frequent messages these devices send, like a sensor reporting motion or a switch turning on a light, and it does it on its own network, separate from the Wi-Fi your phone and laptop use.
How Zigbee works
Zigbee runs on the 2.4 GHz band, but it does not work like Wi-Fi. Instead of every device talking straight to your router, Zigbee builds a mesh. Every mains-powered device (a bulb, a plug, a wired switch) also relays messages for its neighbours. Add more devices and the network reaches further and gets more reliable, routing around anything that drops off.
A Zigbee network has three kinds of device. The coordinator is the brain that sets up the network and passes messages to your phone. Routers are the mains-powered devices that relay signals along the way. End devices are the battery bits, like door and motion sensors, that sleep most of the time to save power. That sleeping is why a Zigbee sensor can run for a year or more on a single coin cell.

Where Zigbee came from
Zigbee is not new. The idea goes back to the late 1990s, and the first specification was ratified in 2004, with the finished release following in 2005. It is built on IEEE 802.15.4, an industry standard for low-power radio, and it was run by the Zigbee Alliance until 2021, when that group renamed itself the Connectivity Standards Alliance to take on Matter. The version you buy today is Zigbee 3.0, from 2015. It folded the old, separate device profiles into one, which is why a bulb from one brand and a sensor from another now share a network far more reliably than they did in the early days.
You need a hub
A Zigbee network needs one coordinator, the brain that pairs devices and passes their messages along. That is what a Philips Hue Bridge or an Aqara hub is. Some smart home hubs and Home Assistant setups include a Zigbee radio, so you may already own one. This is the main catch with Zigbee: no hub, no network.
What Zigbee is good at
Zigbee has been in millions of homes for over a decade, and it shows.
- Battery life. Sensors sip so little power that a single coin cell can last a year or more.
- A mesh that heals itself. Every powered device extends the range, and if one drops off the network reroutes around it.
- Room to grow. A single Zigbee network can, in theory, hold tens of thousands of devices, far more than any home will ever need.
- It works offline. Because it runs locally through its hub, your lights and automations keep working when the internet is down.
Where Zigbee falls short
Zigbee is not the right answer for everything.
- It shares 2.4 GHz with Wi-Fi. In a crowded band, a poorly placed router can cause dropouts.
- It is low bandwidth. Zigbee is built for small messages, not video or audio, so it is no good for cameras.
- It needs a hub. That is one more box to buy and power, and historically each brand pushed its own.
- Older devices could be fussy. Before Zigbee 3.0, gear from different brands did not always play nicely. That is largely fixed now, but some very old devices can still be stubborn.

How the main smart home connection types compare.
The short version: Zigbee and Z-Wave are the low-power mesh options, Wi-Fi is simplest but power-hungry, and Thread is the newer mesh that Matter is built around.
What Zigbee is used for
Zigbee is everywhere in the smart home. Philips Hue lighting, Aqara sensors and switches, IKEA blinds and bulbs, Sonoff gear, smart plugs and door sensors all run on it. Keen users often skip the brand hubs entirely and run Zigbee2MQTT or Home Assistant with a USB Zigbee stick, which pools every brand's devices onto one network and keeps control local.
Where Zigbee is headed
The big shift in the smart home is Matter, the standard that lets devices from different brands work together. Matter does not run on Zigbee, it runs over Wi-Fi and Thread, so Zigbee devices join a Matter home through a bridge, usually the same hub you already own. Your Hue Bridge, for instance, presents your Zigbee lights to Apple Home, Google Home and Alexa as Matter devices.
So is Zigbee dying? No, but it is changing. For a brand-new setup, many people now start with Matter over Thread. Zigbee itself is still moving too: the Connectivity Standards Alliance announced Zigbee 4.0 in late 2025, adding a sub-GHz option branded Suzi for longer range in large or crowded homes, and a feature called Zigbee Direct that lets a phone set devices up over Bluetooth without a hub. The honest summary is that Zigbee is mature and slowly transitioning, not obsolete. With years of devices already in homes, it is not going anywhere soon.

Are Tuya and Zigbee the same?
No. Zigbee is the wireless protocol; Tuya is a platform that many budget brands build on, and plenty of Tuya devices happen to use Zigbee. A Tuya Zigbee device still needs a Tuya-compatible hub to work as intended.
