If you have bought a Matter sensor or a smart lock lately, there is a good chance it runs on Thread. How Thread works

Thread is a low-power wireless mesh built for smart home devices. Like Zigbee, mains-powered devices relay messages for their neighbours, so the network is self-healing and reaches further as you add more. What makes Thread different is that every device has a standard internet address (IPv6), so it speaks the same language as the rest of your network rather than needing a translator. It runs on the same 2.4 GHz radio as Zigbee, so unlike Z-Wave there is no region-specific version, and the hardware is the same worldwide.

Where Thread came from

Thread is not tied to any one company. It was created by the Thread Group in 2014, a coalition that included Google's Nest, ARM, Samsung and others, and more than 300 companies now back it. It was built on the same low-power radio standard as Zigbee, but with one deliberate choice: Thread handles only the network, not the language devices speak. That gap is exactly what Matter later filled, which is why the two fit together so neatly.

What is a border router?

A Thread mesh still has to reach your Wi-Fi and the internet. That job belongs to a border router: a device that bridges Thread to your home network. You rarely buy one on purpose, because it is built into hubs you may already own, like an Apple HomePod, a Google Nest Hub, or a recent Amazon Echo.

Matter over Thread

You will see the phrase Matter over Thread a lot. It simply means a Matter device that uses Thread as its network, rather than Wi-Fi. Matter is the language the device speaks; Thread is the road it travels on. The pairing is popular because Thread gives battery devices years of life and a self-healing mesh, while Matter makes them work across Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings at once.

What Thread is good at

Thread was designed from scratch for the modern smart home, and it shows.

  • Battery life. Sensors and locks wake, send, then sleep, so they run for years on a coin cell.
  • A mesh with no weak point. Every mains-powered device relays, and if one drops off the network reroutes on its own. There is no single hub that can take the whole thing down.
  • Speaks the internet's language. Because every device has an IPv6 address, Thread joins your network without a proprietary gateway translating for it.
  • Built for Matter. Thread does not dictate what devices say, so it pairs naturally with Matter and needs no brand-specific hub.

Where Thread falls short

Thread is not the answer for everything.

  • No high-bandwidth devices. Thread is built for small messages, so it cannot carry video. Cameras stay on Wi-Fi.
  • It needs a border router. With no border router, your Thread devices cannot reach the internet or your phone.
  • Networks do not always merge yet. Each brand's border router could once spin up its own separate Thread network. Thread 1.4 lets them share one instead, but that fix is still rolling out.
  • New features take time to land. Devices already in homes often lag the latest Thread version.

The short version: Thread and Zigbee are close cousins, both low-power mesh on the same radio, but Thread is newer and built for Matter. If you are starting fresh with Matter gear, Thread is the natural fit.

Where Thread is headed

Thread's future is tied to Matter's. The more Matter devices sell, the more border routers end up in living rooms, usually inside a speaker or hub bought for another reason. The standard itself is still maturing. Thread 1.4, from late 2024, lets different brands' border routers share one network instead of each spinning up its own, and improves how the mesh reaches the internet, though that fix is still rolling out across ecosystems.

So is Thread worth caring about? If you are buying new, battery-powered Matter devices, yes. It gives you long battery life, a resilient mesh and no separate hub to buy, and you very likely already own a border router. The main catch is the one every young standard has: support is still catching up, so it is worth checking your hub is a Thread border router before you rely on it.
