Philips Hue Outdoor Lighting

Philips Hue outdoor lighting splits two ways: a 24 V low-voltage system you plug in and lay out yourself, and 240 V fixtures an electrician wires in. Both run alongside your indoor lights.

The low-voltage system

Lily spots and the Calla pedestal run at 24 V off a Hue outdoor power supply, in 40 W and 100 W sizes, with extension cables between them. One lead runs back to a powerpoint, and you can lay it out and change it yourself.

The hardwired fixtures

The Discover floodlight at 2,250 lm and the Impress and Appear wall lights at 1,180 lm are 240 V and hardwired, so they need a licensed electrician.

Weather ratings

The low-voltage spots are IP65, the wall lights and the floodlight are IP44, and the outdoor sensor is IP54. Our outdoor lighting page explains what those numbers mean; the short version is to put the higher-rated pieces where the weather actually lands.

Power budget

A 40 W supply runs a handful of 8 W spots. Buy the 100 W if you plan to extend the run later, and total the wattage of your fixtures before you choose.

More about Philips Hue outdoor lighting

Choosing Philips Hue outdoor lighting.

Plan the run before you order

Work out where the supply sits, how far each fixture is from it, and what the total wattage comes to. Extension cables come in 2.5 m and 5 m, and a run that comes up short means another order and another wait.

Low voltage yourself, 240 V not

Lily, Calla and the outdoor strips plug together and need no electrician. The Discover floodlight and the Impress and Appear wall lights join your mains wiring and do.

Add the sensor, not just the lights

The outdoor motion sensor detects to 12 metres and is what turns a lit path into a path that lights as you arrive. It runs the automation on the Bridge, so it works without your phone.
