Philips Hue Dimmer & Wireless Switches

Three battery-powered Philips Hue controls that stick to the wall with no wiring: the four-button Dimmer Switch, the Tap Dial with a rotary dial, and the one-button Smart Button.

Dimmer Switch

Four buttons: on, off, brighter, dimmer. It pairs over Bluetooth, so it works without the Bridge, which makes it the one to buy for a single room you have just fitted out.

Tap Dial Switch

Four buttons plus a rotary dial. Press a button for a scene, turn the dial to ride the brightness up and down. It needs the Bridge, because the scenes it switches between are stored there.

Smart Button

One button, and it can sit on a bedside table as well as mount to a wall. It also needs the Bridge. Good where there is one thing you want to happen and no decision to make.

Mounting and batteries

All three run on a CR2032 coin cell and magnet onto a bracket you can screw or stick down. Take the control off the wall and it still works, so it doubles as a remote.

More about Philips Hue controls

Choosing a Philips Hue wireless switch.

Mount it over the switch people use

The bracket is sized to sit over a standard wall plate, so the Hue control lands exactly where a hand already goes. That is what stops someone killing power to the bulbs out of habit.

Dial for scenes, buttons for habits

If you switch between a few looks in a room, the Tap Dial's dial earns its price. If you only ever want the lights on and off at a sensible brightness, the Dimmer Switch does the same job for less.

Two of the three need the Bridge

The Dimmer Switch works over Bluetooth on its own. The Tap Dial and Smart Button do not, so budget for a Bridge if either is your starting point.

Both have four buttons and both mount to the wall. The Tap Dial adds a rotary dial for brightness and for cycling scenes, and it needs the Bridge. The Dimmer Switch works over Bluetooth without one. Pick the Dimmer for a simple one-room setup, the Tap Dial once you have scenes worth switching between.

None. All three run on a CR2032 coin cell and mount with a bracket you screw or stick to the wall, so there is no electrician and no hole to make. They can also be picked up and used as a remote.

It controls whatever you have added to your Hue system, which for most people means Hue lights and the Hue Smart Plug. It is not a universal remote for other brands' devices.
