The Philips Hue Bridge is what turns a handful of smart bulbs into a system. Two models: the standard Bridge for 50 devices, and the Bridge Pro for 150 with presence sensing.
Bridge or Bridge Pro
The standard Bridge holds 50 devices and connects by Ethernet. The Bridge Pro holds 150, adds Wi-Fi as well as Ethernet, and adds presence sensing across up to four areas, worked out from the lights and sensors you already have.
One per home
You need one Bridge, not one per room. It sits by the router and the Zigbee mesh reaches the rest of the house through the lights themselves, each of which repeats the signal.
Local control
Scenes and automations run on the Bridge rather than in the cloud, so they fire instantly and keep working when the internet drops.
What it connects to
Both models work natively with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings and Home Assistant, and expose the whole Hue system to Matter controllers.

Count the accessories, not just the lights
The 50-device limit on the standard Bridge counts switches, sensors and plugs as well as lights. A fully fitted house gets there faster than people expect, which is the main reason to start on the Pro.
Where it sits matters
The standard Bridge needs an Ethernet port on your router. The Pro will take Wi-Fi instead, which is the answer when the router is in a cupboard at one end of the house.
What you gain over Bluetooth
Whole-home scenes, automations that run without your phone, remote access, and every accessory in the range. Bluetooth alone covers about ten lights in one room.
