Philips Hue Downlights
Philips Hue downlights fit a standard 90 mm ceiling cutout, so they go straight into the holes most Australian homes already have. Akari in full colour, Garnea in warm-to-cool white.
The cutout
Both take a 90 mm cutout and put out 800 lm, which is the size and the brightness most Australian downlights already are. Replacing existing recessed downlights one for one usually means no new holes in the ceiling.
Akari or Garnea
Akari is full colour and Garnea is warm-to-cool white. If the room is for sitting in, Akari. If it is a kitchen, hallway or laundry, Garnea does the job for less.
Fitting them
Hardwired, so a licensed electrician does the swap under AS/NZS 3000. Neither needs the Bridge for on, off and dimming; the Bridge is for scenes and automations across rooms.
Do the whole room at once
Downlights are the one part of a Hue setup worth buying in a single go. A room half-swapped will show two colour temperatures at the same time, and the electrician is coming either way.

Measure the cutout before you order
90 mm is the common size in Australian ceilings and both Hue downlights take it, but older homes vary. Pull one existing downlight and measure the hole rather than assuming.
Colour or tunable white
Garnea's warm-to-cool white is the sensible default across a house. Akari's full colour is worth the difference in living rooms and media rooms, and hard to justify in a laundry.

Recessed downlights connect to your mains wiring, which is licensed work under AS/NZS 3000.
