Every Shelly energy meter we stock, from a module that measures one appliance to a DIN-rail unit that meters all three phases. What changes between them is where the measurement is taken.
Inline or clamped
The EM Mini Gen4 wires into the circuit and measures the current passing through it, up to 16 A. Everything else in the range measures with a current transformer, a clamp that closes around the cable without breaking into it. Clamps are what let a meter read a whole house.
In the wall or on the rail
The EM Mini Gen4 and EM Gen3 are wall-box modules, 29 x 34 x 16 mm and 37 x 42 x 16 mm. The Pro EM-50 and Pro 3EM-3CT63 are DIN-rail units for the switchboard, which is also where the cables you want to clamp actually run.
One circuit, two, or three phases
The EM Mini Gen4 reads one circuit. The EM Gen3 takes up to two clamps, and the Pro EM-50 has two channels, which is the shape you want for grid and solar side by side. The Pro 3EM-3CT63 does single or three-phase, and three-phase is worth confirming before you order.
The EM Gen3 also switches
Most of the range only measures. The EM Gen3 is the exception: it carries a single dry contact alongside its two clamps, so it can switch an external load as well as meter one. The Pro 3EM takes a Switch Add-On for the same trick.

Start with what you want to know
One appliance, or the whole house? A single circuit you can reach in the wall, the hot water or the air conditioner, is an EM Mini Gen4 job at up to 16 A. Whole-house consumption means clamping the mains where they land in the switchboard, which is a Pro. Answer that first and the model picks itself.
Solar changes the answer
Measuring what you import is one number. Measuring what you generate and export as well is two, and that needs two channels reading two sets of cables. The Pro EM-50 is built for it, and the EM Gen3 will do it in a single-phase house with both clamps in use. A single channel gives you the net figure and hides everything underneath it.
Check the phases before you order
Three-phase supply turns up in plenty of Australian homes, usually the larger ones or the ones running ducted air conditioning, a pool or an EV charger. It is the spec people most often get wrong here, and only the Pro 3EM-3CT63 meters all three. Your switchboard will tell you, or your electrician will at a glance.

Yes, for all of them. The clamps go around live cables in the switchboard and the inline models wire into a circuit, so this is licensed electrician work in Australia either way. The upside is that it is quick: a whole-house meter is usually a single visit, and there is nothing to change about the wiring itself.
It doesn't need to talk to the inverter at all. The clamp reads the current in the cable, so the meter works the same whoever made the panels or the inverter. Put one clamp on the mains and one on the solar circuit and you get import and generation separately, without touching the solar system.
The EM Mini Gen4 and EM Gen3 store at least ten days of one-minute records in the device itself. The Pro EM-50 and Pro 3EM-3CT63 both hold at least sixty days at the same resolution. Anything longer than that means sending the data somewhere, either to the Shelly cloud or to your own system over MQTT.
Yes. The measurement and the on-device log are local, so a meter keeps recording through an outage and the app catches up when the connection returns. What stops is remote access and anything you have pointed at a cloud service. This is the same local-first behaviour as the rest of the Shelly range.
