SmartThings 0.61.6: sharper device health and faster Matter reconnection
SmartThings hub firmware 0.61.6 rolled out in phases through late June, sharpening how the hub works out whether your Zigbee devices are really online and speeding up how Matter devices reconnect after a power cut or a battery swap. It is a stability release: additive, with nothing to reconfigure.

The headline feature: device health that tracks each device on its own terms
Until now, whether a Zigbee device showed as online or offline leaned heavily on the overall health of the network. That worked well enough for chatty devices, but it meant a battery button or a remote could sit there marked as connected long after it had actually stopped responding.
0.61.6 changes the calculation. The hub now reads each device's own reported communication interval and decides its online status individually. Buttons and remotes, which report infrequently and were the worst served by the old network-wide approach, are the clearest winners: they are now tracked on their own terms rather than inferred from everything around them. More honest health data means automations that depend on a device being reachable behave more predictably.

Faster reconnection after a power cut
Matter devices re-establish their link to the hub more quickly after a power cycle or a battery replacement, so a light or sensor comes back on its own instead of waiting on a re-pair.

The Edge drivers pick up fresh Matter 1.5 types: closures for window coverings in the matter-window-covering driver, a soil sensor in matter-sensor, and an irrigation system in matter-switch.

Knob control for Zigbee and Hue lights
Knob controllers can now drive Zigbee and Hue lights directly, and knob-controlled bulbs respond with lower latency.

Update now, or rather, let it update itself. Hub firmware 0.61.6 installs automatically during the phased rollout, and there is nothing to reconfigure. At heart it is a stability release: more honest device-health reporting, quicker Matter reconnection, and a handful of new Matter 1.5 device types. If you run buttons or remotes on SmartThings, the improved health tracking is the part you will feel, with fewer devices showing as online when they have quietly dropped off. It also continues the steady Matter maturing we have been tracking across the ecosystems, from Apple Home's simpler multipack pairing to Home Assistant's Matter lock management.
