Schedules Shelly troubleshooting

Shelly schedule runs at the wrong time, or doesn't run

A schedule fires an hour out, sunset runs at the wrong time, or nothing happens at all. Check the device's clock and time zone first, then its location and the schedule itself.

Why it happens

A Shelly runs its schedules on the device, against its own clock. It sets that clock from the internet and works out local time from its time zone.

Sunrise and sunset come from the latitude and longitude it detected. So most wrong times trace back to one of those three settings, all on one page.

Before you start

Everything here is done on the device's web page or in the Shelly app. None of it involves the wiring.

Quick checks first

Run these checks before moving on to the fixes.

Check the time on its web page

The time is at the bottom right of every page. If it isn't synced, Shelly shows a message at the top of the screen.

Note when it went wrong

Always, only after a blackout, only since the clocks changed, or only for sunset each point to a different cause below.

Fixes, most likely first

Work down the list and stop when it's fixed.

  1. The clock isn't synced

How to tell. Schedules don't run, and the web page shows a not-synced message or no time. Shelly says schedules need an internet connection so the device can sync its time.
    • Check it can reach the internet

A device on a network with no internet, or a router blocking time servers, can't sync. Restart the modem and router if the internet is down.

    • Set a time server or the time by hand

On its web page, go to Settings, then Location and time. Under NTP server, enter a time server on your own network and click Save. Set date and time, further down, sets it by hand if none is available.

  2. The time zone is wrong

How to tell. Every schedule is out by whole hours. Shelly detects the time zone automatically, but it can get it wrong.
    • Choose your state's time zone

On its web page, go to Settings, then Location and time, pick your state's zone from Timezones (Australia/Sydney, for example) and click Save. In the app, it's Geo Location And Time Zone in the device's settings.

    • Use a named zone

A city or state zone follows daylight saving rules. A fixed offset such as Etc/GMT-10 stays the same all year.

  3. Daylight saving changed over

How to tell. It went wrong on the night the clocks changed. Shelly skips a schedule that falls in the hour that doesn't exist, and runs one in the repeated hour once.
    • Move it out of the change-over hour

A schedule set inside the hour the clocks change will skip or run once on change-over night. Move it outside that hour if it matters.

    • Update the firmware

Shelly fixed a daylight saving bug in firmware 2.0.0. Update if it's older.

  4. The location is wrong

How to tell. Sunrise and sunset schedules run at the wrong time while fixed times are right. Shelly works them out from the device's latitude and longitude, which it detects automatically.
    • Enter your location

On its web page, go to Settings, then Location and time. Check Latitude and Longitude are near your home, correct them if not, and click Save. Auto detect tries again.

  5. It was off when the time came

How to tell. One schedule was missed during a blackout, and the next ran normally. Shelly doesn't run a schedule that fell inside a power cut.
    • Set what happens at power on

After a cut, the output follows its Action on power on setting, in the output's Input/Output settings. The power cut guide covers the choices.

  6. Something switched it back

How to tell. The schedule ran, but the output changed again after. Shelly gives a schedule no priority over the app, a wall switch or a scene: the last command wins, and the schedule doesn't hold the state.
    • Check the app's history

The Activity log in the app records every On and Off with its time, so you can see what switched it after the schedule.

    • Check timers too

An Auto off timer also applies to a scheduled On. On its web page, go to Settings, click the output, then Timers, and check Auto OFF is off or at least as long as the schedule's window.

  7. The schedule is off, or set for other days

How to tell. One schedule never runs while others do. Each has its own on and off toggle, and its own days.
    • Check its toggle and days

On its web page, click Schedules. Check the schedule's toggle is on and the days include today.

    • Mind the limit

A device holds up to 20 schedules. Turning on automatic firmware updates in the app adds one of its own.

Frequently asked questions

They're stored on the device, but Shelly says it needs the internet to sync its time. A time server on your own network works too.

No. A schedule that fell inside a power cut isn't run afterwards; the next one runs as normal.

Up to 20, each with up to 5 actions.
