Firmware Shelly troubleshooting
Shelly firmware update fails
The update won't start, won't finish, or the device can't be reached to update at all. Most of the time it's the connection to Shelly's update server.

Why it happens
A Shelly downloads its firmware straight from Shelly's update server, over a secure connection. It needs internet access to that server, a strong enough Wi-Fi signal to finish the download, and the right time on its clock.
You can update from the Shelly app or from the device's own web page. When one fails, the cause is usually the same for both, so it's worth finding it rather than retrying.
Every fix here is done in the Shelly app, a browser or your router's settings. Don't open the wall plate. Only use Shelly's own firmware: Shelly says custom firmware voids the warranty, and going back doesn't restore everything.
Quick checks first
Run these checks before moving on to the fixes.
The firmware version shows at the bottom of the device's web page, and under Settings, then Device settings, then Firmware.
Shelly offers updates two ways: the Shelly app (Settings, then Firmware versions) and the device's own web page. If one fails, try the other.
During an update it flashes half a second on, half a second off. A 5-second button hold gives the same flash, so don't press the button while it updates.
Fixes, most likely first

- Most likely for you
It can't reach Shelly's update server
How to tell. Check for update finds nothing, or the update fails straight away. The cloud icon at the top of its web page may also be white or grey.- Make sure it has internet
The device downloads updates from updates.shelly.cloud on TCP port 443. It doesn't need the Shelly cloud turned on, only that address reachable.
- Check the router isn't blocking it
If your router or firewall filters outgoing traffic, allow updates.shelly.cloud by name. Shelly says not to allow it by IP address, as those change.
- Update from the web page
Open its IP address in a browser and go to Settings, then Device settings, then Firmware. Click Check for updates, then Update if a new version shows.

The Wi-Fi signal is weak
How to tell. The update starts but doesn't finish, or the device drops offline in the app from time to time.- Check the RSSI
On its web page, go to Settings, then Wi-Fi. The Status line shows the signal as RSSI. Shelly aims for -67 dBm or better.
- Bring the Wi-Fi closer, then try again
Add a mesh node or access point nearer the device, check the RSSI again, then run the update.

Its clock is wrong
How to tell. The web page shows a banner saying the time isn't synced, or the time in the footer is wrong.- Let it sync the time
Shelly says a wrong clock causes secure connections to fail, and the update downloads over a secure connection. The device syncs the time over UDP port 123, so make sure your router isn't blocking it.
- Restart it, then try again
On its web page, go to Settings, then Device settings, and click Reboot. Once the banner has gone, run the update.

It's in Zigbee mode
How to tell. It's paired to a Zigbee hub, it has no IP address, and the Shelly app can't see it. Gen4 devices on firmware older than 2.0.0 can't update over Zigbee.- Turn its Wi-Fi back on
Hold the button for 5 seconds to turn its access point back on, then add it in the Shelly app or open 192.168.33.1 in a browser.
- Update over Wi-Fi
Run the update from the app or the web page, then switch it back to Zigbee if you want to.
- Switch modes from the web page next time
Shelly says that once it has updated, the 5-press button switch between Matter and Zigbee stops working. Switch modes in the device's web page settings instead.

It updated, and the web page moved to HTTPS
How to tell. The update worked, but the browser now warns about the device's web page, or something that talks to it stopped working.- Know it's expected
From firmware 2.0, the web page redirects to HTTPS, and Shelly says browsers may show a certificate warning. The device is fine.
- Update Home Assistant first
Shelly says to check your Home Assistant Shelly integration is up to date before you update the firmware.

On your device
Shelly Presence Gen4 The light flashes red and blue
- Read the update light
While it updates, the light flashes red and blue. In the app the update is under the Firmware versions tab, which can also schedule automatic updates.
