Why it happens
A factory reset makes a Shelly forget your Wi-Fi, its users and every setting, then wait to be set up again. You can start one from the app, from the device's own web page or with the button.
The app and the web page are the easy routes, because you don't need to touch the device. The button works when nothing else can reach it, but it's on the device itself, which is usually tucked behind a switch or a light fitting.
A reset deletes everything on the device: its Wi-Fi details, users, schedules and scripts. The button is on the device itself, which is often behind a switch plate or up in the ceiling. Don't open the wall plate to reach it. Use the app or the web page, or ask a licensed electrician.
Quick checks first
Run these checks before moving on to the fixes.
If it's only lost your Wi-Fi, holding the button for 5 seconds reopens setup without wiping anything. See the Wi-Fi guide first.
Take screenshots of its schedules, timers, scripts and input settings. None of them survive a reset, and you'll want them when you set it up again.
Fixes, most likely first
Work down the list and stop when it's fixed.

Reset it from the Shelly app
How to tell. The device opens in the Shelly Smart Control app and you can get to its settings.- Open the device's settings
Open the device in the app and go to the Settings tab.
- Tap Factory Reset
Tap Factory Reset and confirm. The device leaves your Wi-Fi, and every user on it, you included, is removed from it.

- Click Reset and OK
Under Factory reset, click Reset, then click OK on the pop-up. Every setting goes back to its default.

Reset it with the button
How to tell. Neither the app nor the web page can reach it, or it was set up on a network you no longer have. You need to be able to reach the device without opening a wall plate.- Hold the button for 10 seconds
Press and hold the Reset/control button on the device for a full 10 seconds. On a Shelly 1 Gen4 it's the round button on the back, lower right, the side with the printed label.
- Watch the light while you hold
The LED flashes every half second once you pass 5 seconds, then speeds up to a quarter-second flash at 10. Let go after it speeds up.
- Check it's waiting for setup
A slow flash, one second on and one second off, means its hotspot is on and it's waiting to be set up. Add it in the app within 15 minutes.

It only reopened setup
How to tell. You held the button, the light flashed every half second, and the device kept its name and settings when it came back.- Hold it for the full 10 seconds
A 5-second hold only turns its hotspot and Bluetooth back on. Hold the button again and keep holding until the flashing speeds up.

- Toggle it once with the light connected
After a factory reset the dimmer calibrates itself to your light on its first toggle. Make sure the light is connected before you switch it on for the first time.

- 10 seconds resets it
Holding the button for 10 seconds resets it to factory settings. A 5-second hold does a network reset instead, and if you don't set it up within 3 minutes it keeps its existing settings.
- Slow blue means it's ready
Slow flashing blue means it's in setup mode and ready to add.
