Setup & Wi-Fi Shelly troubleshooting

Shelly not found during setup

You go to add a new Shelly and the app can't see it. Usually the setup window has closed, Bluetooth is off, or the device is already on your Wi-Fi.

What are you seeing?

Pick the closest match and we'll point you to the fix most likely to sort it.

Why it happens

A new or reset Shelly opens two ways in for setup: Bluetooth, and a Wi-Fi hotspot of its own. Both stay open for 15 minutes after the device powers up, and the app finds it through one of them.

If the app can't find it, either those two have closed, your phone can't use them, or the device has already moved on: it's joined your Wi-Fi, or it's been switched to Zigbee. Once it's found but won't join your network, that's the Wi-Fi guide's job.

Before you start

Every fix here is done in the Shelly app, a browser or your router. Only press the device's button if you can reach it without opening the wall plate. If you can't, turn it off and on at the switchboard instead, or ask your electrician.

Check how long it's had power

A new or reset Shelly only offers Bluetooth and its own hotspot for 15 minutes after it powers up. If it's been on longer than that, start with the first fix.

Read the LED

It shows red on the back, just below the warning triangle. One second on, one second off means it's waiting for setup. Solid means it's already on Wi-Fi.

Look for its hotspot

In your phone's Wi-Fi list, look for a network named after the model, such as Shelly1G4 followed by a code. If it's there, the device is waiting to be set up.

Check you're signed in

Every way of adding a device needs a Shelly account, with the email confirmed using the code Shelly sends.

Fixes, most likely first

Work down the list and stop when it's fixed.

  1. The setup window has closed

How to tell. It has power, but it's been on for more than 15 minutes. The app finds nothing and there's no Shelly hotspot in your phone's Wi-Fi list.
    • Reopen setup with the button

Press and hold the round button on the back of the device, the side with the printed label, for 5 seconds. Its hotspot and Bluetooth come back on. Don't hold it for 10, which is a factory reset.

    • Or turn it off and on

Turn the circuit off at the switchboard, wait a few seconds and turn it back on. Shelly says a device that never got online in its first 15 minutes keeps setup switched off until it's power-cycled or reset.

    • Have the app ready first

Open the Shelly app and sign in before you power the device up, then add it straight away. Shelly's advice is not to power a device up until you're ready to add it.

  2. Bluetooth is off, or the app can't use it

How to tell. You're using Add via Bluetooth, the device is inside its 15 minutes and the search finds nothing.
    • Turn on Bluetooth and allow it

Switch Bluetooth on in your phone's settings and give the Shelly app permission to use it. The app asks for this the first time you add a device.

    • Stand close and give it time

Shelly gives the Bluetooth range as up to 10 metres indoors, less through walls. Stand near the device. Shelly says finding it can take a few minutes.

    • Try its hotspot instead

In the app, choose Add via Wi-Fi (AP scan). It finds the device through the hotspot it opens during setup, with no Bluetooth needed.

  3. It's already on your Wi-Fi

How to tell. The LED is on solid, so the device has joined your network. Shelly turns its hotspot off once it's connected, so Bluetooth and hotspot searches won't find it.
    • Use Scan network

In the app's add menu, choose Scan network. Shelly says it's for a device on your local Wi-Fi that isn't in your account yet.

    • Or add it by its address

Choose Add by IP, enter the device's IP address and tap Check device. Your router's list of connected devices shows the address.

  4. It's been switched to Zigbee

How to tell. Someone pressed the button five times in a row. That switches a Gen4 from Wi-Fi and Matter to Zigbee, and in Zigbee mode it leaves your Wi-Fi entirely, with no IP address for the app to find.
    • Turn its hotspot back on

Hold the button for 5 seconds. Shelly says that turns the hotspot back on in Zigbee mode, so you can reach the device over Wi-Fi again.

    • Switch it back on its web page

Join its hotspot and open 192.168.33.1 in a browser. Go to Settings and click Switch to alternative firmware to move it back to Matter. Shelly says that after a firmware update the button can no longer switch modes, so this is the way that always works.

  5. Your network hides it from the scan

How to tell. The device is on your Wi-Fi, but Scan network comes back empty. Your phone is on a guest network or a different network, or the router keeps wireless devices apart.
    • Put your phone on the same network

Scan network finds devices on the same network as your phone. Join the network the Shelly is on, not a guest network.

    • Turn off client isolation

Shelly says client isolation should be off on the network your Shelly devices use. Some routers call it AP isolation or guest mode.

    • Add it by IP instead

Shelly devices announce themselves on UDP port 5353, which some routers block. Add by IP needs only the address, so it works when the scan doesn't.

  6. The account isn't set up yet

How to tell. The app won't let you add anything, or asks you to sign in or confirm your email.
    • Finish signing up

Create the account in the Shelly app, pick your region, and enter the code Shelly emails you. Then start adding the device again.

On your device

  • Read the colour

Slow blue means it's waiting for setup. Slow or flashing purple means it's in Zigbee mode. Press the button once to show the current state.

  • Its button works differently

Hold it for 5 seconds for a network reset, which opens setup again. Shelly says it keeps its settings if nothing happens within 3 minutes. Five presses switch it between Matter and Zigbee.

Frequently asked questions

Shelly added the window as a security measure. Once a device is set up, it also turns Bluetooth off, and turning it back on opens another 15 minutes.

Yes. Join its hotspot and open 192.168.33.1 in a browser. Shelly says the app is optional, and the device works on its own or with other systems.

The Shelly does. Gen4 devices only join 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. For Scan network, your phone needs to be on the same network as the device.
