One mains Shelly does the talking
The sensor is a battery device that broadcasts over Bluetooth and nothing more. A mains-powered Shelly nearby picks that up and passes it on to your network, your app, or your home automation system. If you already have one behind a switch or in the switchboard, it is doing this job whether you knew it or not. Any of the Plus, Gen3, Gen4 and Pro devices will act as the gateway, so there is no separate bridge to buy for the BLU range.
Motion, and how dark it is
A PIR element picks up movement and body heat, and a lux meter alongside it reports how much light is in the room. Both go out in the same broadcast, so an automation can ask for movement and darkness together. That is the difference between lights that come on every time someone walks past and lights that only come on when it is actually dark. One sensor, and no sunset schedule to keep in step with the seasons.
About five years on one coin cell
The sensor sleeps until something happens, then sends a short broadcast and goes quiet again. That is what gets it to roughly five years on a single coin cell, and the first one is in the box. Beacon mode sends an update every 30 seconds whether anything has changed or not, which will shorten that considerably. Leave it off unless you have a reason to want it.
How Shelly works
A Shelly is a small module that makes wiring you already have controllable. It joins your Wi-Fi directly, holds its schedules and scenes on the device itself, and keeps running them if your internet drops. Nothing you set up depends on Shelly's servers being reachable.
The brain is the device
Shelly does the thinking locally, not in a data centre. Schedules, scenes and logic are stored on the unit and run there, so the lights still come on at dusk when the internet is out.
No hub, no bridge
There is nothing to buy before the first one works. Where a Philips Hue setup is built around a Bridge that every light talks through, a Shelly joins your router directly and answers your phone from there.
The app is optional
Every Shelly serves its own web interface, so you can set it up and run it from a browser on your own network, with no account. The Shelly Smart Control app and Shelly Cloud are free and add remote access and voice control, but nothing needs them.
What Gen1 to Gen4 means
Shelly has run through four hardware generations, and the same product name can exist in more than one of them. Later generations are faster and carry more radios than the ones before, which is why the generation is part of the name. The specifications on each page tell you which one you are looking at.
It goes behind what you already have Start here
Shelly retrofits. The module fits behind the switch, socket or appliance that is already there, so your switch plates and fittings stay as they are and the original switch keeps working for anyone who just wants to flick it. Anything wired into a mains circuit is a job for a licensed electrician.
Open by design Then run it your way
Shelly publishes its local API and does not put it behind a developer account. Devices answer HTTP and MQTT on your own network and can run small scripts on themselves. That is why Shelly is the default choice for people building on Home Assistant, which ships an official Shelly integration.
Start with one and add more whenever you like. There is no hub to outgrow, and each Shelly works on its own whether you ever add another or not.

Use cases
Hallway lights that only come on after dark
The sensor reports movement and the light level in the same breath, so the hallway lights trigger at 2am and stay put at 2pm. There is no sunset schedule to keep in step with the seasons.
Lights that turn themselves off in the rooms you pass through
The laundry, the garage, the walk-in robe. Lights come on when you walk in and go off a few minutes after the movement stops, so nobody has to remember the switch.

A mains-powered Shelly within Bluetooth range to act as its gateway. Any of the Plus, Gen3, Gen4 or Pro devices will do it, including a 1 Mini Gen4 already sitting behind a light switch. On its own the sensor has nothing to report to.
Up to about 10 metres indoors, and further in the open. Walls and floors cut that down, so put the gateway in the same room or the next one.
Not by itself. It has no Matter or Zigbee radio, so it only reaches those platforms through whatever your Shelly gateway is connected to. In Home Assistant the BLU range is supported through the BTHome integration.
A single CR2477 coin cell, included, good for around five years.
No. It has no ingress rating, so keep it indoors.
