How to add a Shelly BLU sensor to the Shelly app
Add a Shelly BLU door, window or motion sensor to the Shelly Smart Control app, choose the Shelly that acts as its Bluetooth gateway, and fix one that stops reporting.
Shelly BLU sensors, such as the BLU Door/Window and BLU Motion, run on a battery and talk Bluetooth rather than Wi-Fi. To reach the Shelly app when you're away from home, each one needs a Shelly on your Wi-Fi nearby to pass its readings on. That Shelly is its Bluetooth gateway.
Before you start
- A Shelly relay or dimmer already in the app, within about 10 metres of where the sensor will go. Plus, Pro, Gen3 and Gen4 models can all be a gateway. If yours isn't set up yet, add it to the Shelly app first.
- Bluetooth on, with your phone next to the sensor and the app allowed to use Bluetooth.
Add your sensor
- Choose Add via Bluetooth
Open Shelly Smart Control, tap the plus sign in the lower-right corner, choose Add via Bluetooth and tap Next.
- Pick the sensor and tap Next
The scan lists new devices nearby. If the sensor isn't there, press its button once to wake it. With more than one door or window sensor showing, close the one you're adding: its Opened label disappears.
- Press the sensor's button once
When the app says Please press device button, press the button on the sensor once.
- Name it and tap Next
Name it after where it is, such as Back door or Hallway motion, so you can tell your sensors apart later.
- Tick its Bluetooth gateway
The app lists your Shellys. Tick the one closest to the sensor, and any others nearby that should pick it up too, then tap Next.
- Put it in a room and tap Save
Pick a room, or add a new one. The app confirms the sensor is part of your account, and it appears in that room.
To check it works, open and close the door or window, or walk past the motion sensor. The sensor's tile in the app should change to match.
If it doesn't report
- Move the gateway closer, or add another. Bluetooth reaches about 10 metres indoors, and walls and metal cut that down. You can also tick a second gateway closer to the sensor.
- Check the gateway has it. In the app, open the gateway Shelly, then Bluetooth, then Assigned Bluetooth devices. If the sensor isn't listed, tap Add BLE device and add it from there.
- Turn the gateway on in older firmware. On older Plus and Pro firmware, open the Shelly's Bluetooth settings and tick Enable Bluetooth and Enable Bluetooth gateway. Current Gen4 firmware switches Bluetooth on by itself when a sensor needs it.
- Start again. Hold the sensor's button for 30 seconds, just after putting its battery in, to factory reset it. Then delete it from the app and add it again.
On the ZB models, five quick presses of the button starts Zigbee pairing instead. That's for joining a Zigbee hub, not the Shelly app.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Shelly BLU gateway?
A Shelly on your Wi-Fi that picks up a BLU sensor's Bluetooth signal and passes it on to the Shelly app, or to other devices on your network. Plus, Pro, Gen3 and Gen4 relays and dimmers can all do it, so a Shelly you already own is usually enough.
Can a BLU sensor have more than one gateway?
Yes. The gateway screen lets you tick several Shellys. Choose the ones closest to the sensor. Shelly recommends having a gateway in every room.
How far can a BLU sensor be from its gateway?
Up to about 10 metres indoors and 30 metres outdoors, according to Shelly. Walls, metal and appliances in between cut that down.
Why does my BLU sensor show an old reading?
It only sends when something changes, such as a door opening or motion being detected, so a quiet sensor can be working fine. Open the door or walk past it to check. Beacon mode makes it report every 30 seconds, at a real cost to battery life.
How long does the battery last?
Shelly rates the BLU Door/Window and BLU Motion at five years on their included batteries, a CR2032 and a CR2477. Beacon mode shortens that considerably.
