Product features
One mains Shelly does the talking
The sensor is a battery device that broadcasts over Bluetooth and nothing more. A mains-powered Shelly nearby picks that up and passes it on to your network, your app, or your home automation system. If you already have one behind a switch or in the switchboard, it is doing this job whether you knew it or not. Any of the Plus, Gen3, Gen4 and Pro devices will act as the gateway, so there is no separate bridge to buy for the BLU range.

Open, closed, or just tilted
The reed switch tells you the moment the two parts separate. A second sensor reads the angle, so a tilt-and-turn window reports as vented rather than simply open, and you can tell a window cracked for air from one left wide. While it is open the sensor checks the angle every eight seconds and sends an update whenever it moves. The light level goes out with every report as well.

About five years on one coin cell
The sensor sleeps until something happens, then sends a short broadcast and goes quiet again. That is what gets it to roughly five years on a single coin cell, and the first one is in the box. Beacon mode sends an update every 30 seconds whether anything has changed or not, which will shorten that considerably. Leave it off unless you have a reason to want it.

Alongside Bluetooth the sensor carries a Zigbee 3.0 radio, and it can run both at once. Most people here will use the Bluetooth path through a Shelly gateway, which is the setup we sell for. If you already run a Zigbee coordinator, Home Assistant with a Zigbee dongle for instance, you can pair it there instead and skip the gateway. Five quick presses of the button puts it into Zigbee pairing mode.

How Shelly works
A Shelly is a small module that makes wiring you already have controllable. It joins your Wi-Fi directly, holds its schedules and scenes on the device itself, and keeps running them if your internet drops. Nothing you set up depends on Shelly's servers being reachable.
The device
The brain is the device
Shelly does the thinking locally, not in a data centre. Schedules, scenes and logic are stored on the unit and run there, so the lights still come on at dusk when the internet is out.
The network
No hub, no bridge
There is nothing to buy before the first one works. Where a Philips Hue setup is built around a Bridge that every light talks through, a Shelly joins your router directly and answers your phone from there.
The control
The app is optional
Every Shelly serves its own web interface, so you can set it up and run it from a browser on your own network, with no account. The Shelly Smart Control app and Shelly Cloud are free and add remote access and voice control, but nothing needs them.

What Gen1 to Gen4 means
Shelly has run through four hardware generations, and the same product name can exist in more than one of them. Later generations are faster and carry more radios than the ones before, which is why the generation is part of the name. The specifications on each page tell you which one you are looking at.

It goes behind what you already have Start here
Shelly retrofits. The module fits behind the switch, socket or appliance that is already there, so your switch plates and fittings stay as they are and the original switch keeps working for anyone who just wants to flick it. Anything wired into a mains circuit is a job for a licensed electrician.

Open by design Then run it your way
Shelly publishes its local API and does not put it behind a developer account. Devices answer HTTP and MQTT on your own network and can run small scripts on themselves. That is why Shelly is the default choice for people building on Home Assistant, which ships an official Shelly integration.
Start with one and add more whenever you like. There is no hub to outgrow, and each Shelly works on its own whether you ever add another or not.

Use cases
The back door someone left open
A contact sensor on the door and a rule that waits. If it is still open after five minutes, your phone gets told, or the light by the door starts blinking.
A window still vented when the weather turns
The tilt reading tells you a window is cracked for air rather than shut. Tie it to the forecast and you get the nudge before the weather arrives, not after.
Lights and heating that react when you get home
The front door opening after dark is a reliable sign someone is home. Use it to bring the entry lights up, start the heating, and take the house out of its away routine.

A mains-powered Shelly Plus, Gen3, Gen4 or Pro within Bluetooth range, acting as the gateway. Any one of them will do it, including a 1 Mini Gen4 already sitting behind a light switch.
No, and Bluetooth is the path most people here will take. It does speak Zigbee 3.0, and it can run both radios at once, so if you already have a Zigbee coordinator, Home Assistant with a Zigbee dongle for instance, you can pair it there and skip the Shelly gateway. We don't currently sell a coordinator that will adopt it. The Hue Bridge takes Hue's own range and its certified partners, not a generic Zigbee 3.0 sensor.
