Home Assistant & Matter Shelly troubleshooting

Shelly Matter pairing fails

Apple Home, Google Home or Home Assistant can't add your Shelly over Matter, or it adds and shows No Response. Usually it's the pairing window or IPv6.

Why it happens

Gen4 Shelly devices come with Matter turned on. To add one, your phone finds it over Bluetooth and passes it your Wi-Fi details. From then on your hub talks to it over your home network, using IPv6.

Pairing can fail at any of those points: the device has stopped offering itself for pairing, the phone is on a different network, or the network doesn't carry what Matter needs. The device's web page shows the first of those straight away.

Before you start

Every fix here is done in your Matter app, a browser or your router. Gen4 Shelly devices run Matter over Wi-Fi, so they need 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and no Thread border router. Don't open the wall plate to read a label; ask your electrician.

Check it's on your Wi-Fi

The LED on the back is on solid once the device has joined your Wi-Fi.

Put your phone on home Wi-Fi

Turn off mobile data while you pair, and join the same network as the Shelly and your hub.

Check you have a Matter hub

Matter needs a controller. Shelly names Apple TV 4K, Amazon Echo 4th gen or newer, Samsung SmartThings Hub and Google Nest Hub 2nd gen.

Check the Matter page

On the device's web page, open Matter from the menu. It shows whether Matter is on and whether the device is ready to pair.

Fixes, most likely first

Work down the list and stop when it's fixed.

  1. The pairing window has closed

How to tell. Your Matter app never finds the device. Its web page says the commissioning window is expired, which Shelly says happens after a timeout.
    • Restart the device

Open Matter from the device's web page menu. Under the message "Commissioning window is expired", click Reboot.

    • Pair straight away

Once it's back up, scan the code in your Matter app straight away, before the window closes again.

  2. Your phone isn't on the same network

How to tell. Pairing starts, then fails. Shelly says the phone, the hub and the device all need to be on the same network while it pairs.
    • Join the Shelly's network

Turn off mobile data and connect your phone to the Wi-Fi the Shelly is on, not a guest network.

    • Stand close to it

The phone starts pairing over Bluetooth, then hands the device over to your Wi-Fi. Keep the phone near the device until it's added.

  3. IPv6 is off on your router

How to tell. The Shelly app works, but your Matter app shows No Response. Matter talks to the device over IPv6 once it's paired, and IPv4 alone isn't enough.
    • Check the device has an IPv6 address

On the device's web page, go to Settings, then Wi-Fi. Under IPv6 addresses, look for one starting with fd, or with your internet provider's prefix.

    • Turn on IPv6 in the router

In your router's settings, find IPv6, often under WAN or Network, and turn it on. Shelly says you don't need IPv6 from your internet provider. Local addresses are enough.

  4. The router filters Matter's traffic

How to tell. It pairs, then drops out after a few minutes, usually on mesh or business-grade Wi-Fi with separate networks for different devices.
    • Keep it on one network

Keep the Shelly, the hub and Home Assistant on the same network. Shelly and Home Assistant both say Matter can fail across VLANs.

    • Turn off multicast filtering

Shelly names IGMP snooping, multicast filtering and multicast to unicast as settings that break Matter on networks like UniFi. Turn them off for the network your Shelly devices use.

  5. Matter is turned off

How to tell. Its web page shows Matter isn't enabled, or the device was switched to Zigbee with five quick presses and has left your Wi-Fi.
    • Turn Matter on

Open Matter from the device's web page menu. Tick Enable and click Save and reboot.

    • Switch it back from Zigbee

Hold the button for 5 seconds to turn its hotspot on, join it, and open 192.168.33.1. Go to Settings and click Switch to alternative firmware.

  6. The hub or app isn't ready

How to tell. You can't find an option to add a Matter device, or Home Assistant says Matter is unavailable.
    • Open Add integration

In Home Assistant, go to Settings, then Devices and services, and tap Add integration.

    • Pick Matter

Search for Matter and tap it. On Home Assistant OS it installs the Matter Server app with it.

    • Use the companion app

Home Assistant says you can only add a new Matter device from the Home Assistant app on your phone, not from a browser.

    • Give Google Play Services time

On Android, Home Assistant says the Matter parts of Google Play Services can take up to 24 hours to arrive.

  7. You can't find the setup code

How to tell. There's no QR code to hand. Shelly prints it on the device label, and shows it in the app and on the device's web page.
    • Read it on the web page

Open Matter from the device's web page menu. While it's ready to pair, the page shows the QR code and the 11-digit manual code.

    • Photograph it for next time

Home Assistant suggests a photo of the code, since you need it again after a reset.

On your device

Shelly Presence Gen4 It shows one zone by default
  • Choose how many zones to share

Shelly says the Presence Gen4 shows one room zone in Matter to start with, and up to ten. Set the number on its Matter page.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Matter lets one device join several controllers. Home Assistant says the standard allows at least five.

No. Gen4 Shelly devices run Matter over Wi-Fi. A border router is only for Thread devices.

No. IPv6 has to be on in your home network, but Shelly and Home Assistant both say local addresses are enough.
