Brew coffee or boil the kettle on a wake-up schedule

The idea

Setting a smart plug to switch on at your normal wake-up time is one of the simplest automations in a smart kitchen. The appliance itself needs no smart features at all: the smart plug supplies power on schedule, and by the time you reach the kettle or coffee maker, it's already running. It needs almost no extra hardware beyond the plug, which is why it's usually the first automation people set up once they've got a hub or coordinator in place.

What you'll need

• A smart plug rated for the appliance's full wattage (see the safety note below, it matters more than it sounds).
• A trigger: either a fixed daily schedule, or your phone alarm being dismissed, if you want tighter timing.
• The appliance prepped the night before, water and grounds or a tea bag loaded, since the automation only turns power on.

How the automation works

Every automation follows the same trigger, condition, action pattern: something happens, an optional check runs, then an action fires. For this one:

• Trigger: a fixed time each morning, or your phone's alarm being dismissed (a few smart home platforms can use "alarm dismissed" as a trigger through a companion app).
• Condition: restrict it to weekdays only, using a day-of-week condition, if your weekend routine is different.
• Action: turn the smart plug on. Add a second automation to turn it off again 20 to 30 minutes later, so the appliance isn't left powered indefinitely.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Using a smart plug with a kettle or heating element without checking ratings first. This is the single biggest risk with this automation.
• Forgetting to prep the appliance the night before. An empty kettle switched on by a smart plug is a real risk, and not every kettle's internal fail-safe catches it.
• Skipping the "off" companion automation. Leaving a heating appliance powered indefinitely after the trigger fires is easy to avoid with a simple timed "off" rule.

Variations worth trying

The same on-a-schedule pattern works for other low-risk, non-heating kitchen devices too: under-cabinet LED strip lighting turning on alongside the coffee maker as a "getting up" cue is a common pairing. Some households prefer triggering off "alarm dismissed" rather than a fixed clock time, so the coffee doesn't start brewing on the mornings you sleep in or wake early.
