Warm white vs cool white: choosing colour temperature
Warm white, cool white and daylight are the same brightness at different colour temperatures. Here is what each one suits, and how a tunable smart bulb lets you skip the choice.
Warm white and cool white are not different brightnesses. A 2700K and a 4000K bulb can throw exactly the same number of lumens. What changes is the colour of the light: warm white leans yellow and cosy, cool white leans crisp and blue-white. That colour is measured in kelvin (K), and it is the single number worth reading on a bulb box.

Australian bulb boxes almost always use three labels. The coolest carries the higher number:

Standard white, or neutral white, is the middle of this range, around 3500 to 4000K. Australian boxes usually fold it into cool white rather than labelling it separately.
Which white for which room
The rule of thumb: warmer where you relax, cooler where you work. Warm white in a kitchen can feel dull; daylight in a bedroom feels like a servo at 2am. Match the colour to what the room is for.

How a smart bulb changes the question
Everything above assumes you pick one colour and live with it. A smart bulb does not make you choose. Manufacturers sell three tiers, and the middle tier is the one most people actually want: it covers the whole warm-to-cool range, so the same bulb is warm white for dinner and cool white for cleaning, on a schedule or a tap.

What colour temperature is warm white?
