Apple Home, September 2026: iOS 27 describes your camera clips, at a price
iOS 27 landed on 14 September with the Home update Apple announced at WWDC in June: written video descriptions for HomeKit Secure Video clips, clip search, and notifications that fold related alerts into one. Video descriptions sit behind the larger iCloud+ plans and cover only a few cameras each, and two older Apple TV models are left behind.
The headline: iOS 27 adds written video descriptions for HomeKit Secure Video clips, but only on a 2 TB iCloud+ plan or larger, and the 2 TB plan describes one camera.
The headline feature: camera clips that describe themselves
Until now a HomeKit Secure Video alert told you it had seen motion, a person, an animal, a vehicle or a package, and you opened the clip to find out what that meant. iOS 27 adds video descriptions: a written summary of what happens in each recording.
The home's owner needs an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, with Apple Intelligence turned on in the Home app. The home hub has to be a HomePod (2nd generation), HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K running the latest software, and the owner needs an eligible iCloud+ plan. Apple then limits video descriptions by plan: one camera on 2 TB, two on 6 TB and five on 12 TB. In Australian prices that is A$14.99 a month for one camera, A$44.99 for two and A$89.99 for five.
Those limits are separate from recording, which has not changed. A 2 TB plan still records every camera you own and describes one of them. A household with four cameras on 2 TB keeps recording all four, gets video descriptions for one, and would need the 12 TB plan to cover all four.
Three smaller wins
The changes most people will notice day to day. Scan the tags for the areas you use.
Related alerts arrive as one
Summarised activity notifications combine related alerts from different accessories into a single notification. They need an iPhone or iPad that supports Apple Intelligence, a home hub on the latest software, and Location Services turned on. No iCloud+ plan is needed.
Search your clips by typing what you want
Camera clip search finds moments from your HomeKit Secure Video cameras when you search in the Home app or Spotlight. You need a device that supports Apple Intelligence, and the home's owner needs an eligible iCloud+ plan.
Recording up to 4K on supported cameras
Supported HomeKit Secure Video cameras can now stream and record in 4K, which does not need Apple Intelligence. It does need an iCloud+ plan and a compatible camera, and Apple has not published which cameras qualify, so check the maker's website before buying for it.
Breaking changes
One this month, and it's narrow. If the summary at the top already cleared you, nothing below applies to your setup.
tvOS 27 does not install on the Apple TV HD or the Apple TV 4K (1st generation). Both keep running tvOS 26, but Apple's new Home features need the home hub on the latest software.
What to do: check which Apple TV is your home hub. If it is one of those two, a HomePod mini or a newer Apple TV 4K on the latest software is needed for the new features.
Should you update?
Update your iPhone, but check your home hub first. If an Apple TV HD or a first-generation Apple TV 4K is the hub, it cannot move to tvOS 27, and none of the new Home features will work until a current HomePod or Apple TV 4K takes over. Everything else about an existing setup, recording included, carries on as before.
Check the price before you move to a bigger iCloud+ plan for video descriptions. The 2 TB plan describes one camera, two cameras need 6 TB at A$44.99 a month, and three to five need 12 TB at A$89.99.

Frequently asked questions
When was iOS 27 released?
On 14 September 2026.
Do the new Apple Home features work in Australia?
Yes. Apple Intelligence supports English as the device language. You also need a device that supports Apple Intelligence and a home hub on the latest software, and video descriptions and clip search need an eligible iCloud+ plan.
Which iCloud+ plan do I need for video descriptions?
At least 2 TB. Apple covers one camera on 2 TB (A$14.99 a month), two on 6 TB (A$44.99) and five on 12 TB (A$89.99).
Does my 2 TB plan still record all my cameras?
Yes. HomeKit Secure Video recording still covers unlimited cameras on 2 TB and above. Only video descriptions have the lower camera limit.
Can my Apple TV still be my home hub?
An Apple TV HD or first-generation Apple TV 4K cannot update to tvOS 27, so it cannot run the latest software the new Home features require. Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) and later, the HomePod mini and the HomePod (2nd generation) can.
Can my HomeKit camera record in 4K now?
If the camera supports it. You also need an iCloud+ plan, and Apple has not published which cameras qualify, so check with the manufacturer.
