Sharing an accessory between Apple Home and Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings
A Matter accessory can belong to Apple Home and Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings at once. The sharing steps, the code that expires, and the factory-reset trap to know first.
Mixed households are the normal case: an iPhone and an Android in the same house, an Echo in the kitchen, a Google TV in the lounge. Matter's multi-admin feature is built for exactly this. One physical accessory, a light, a plug, a sensor, can be commissioned into Apple Home and Google Home and Alexa and SmartThings at the same time, each platform controlling it from its own app. This is documented, supported behaviour, not a workaround.
It also has sharp edges the marketing never mentions. Here is the flow, then the traps.
What shares, and what cannot
Only Matter accessories participate. A HomeKit-only accessory pairs to one controller at a time, which is a property of how HomeKit pairing works rather than a missing Apple feature, so there is no setting that exposes it outward. To move a HomeKit-only accessory to another platform you would have to remove it from Apple Home entirely; the practical answer for a mixed household is to buy Matter where the choice exists.
Apple Home itself takes accessories in and never publishes them out: it is a Matter controller, not a bridge. What you are sharing with multi-admin is the accessory, not your Apple Home.

- Turn on pairing mode and copy the code
Apple's flow generates a fresh, temporary pairing code for the accessory. The code on the box will not work; once an accessory has been commissioned, the printed QR code is dead for this purpose.
- Move quickly to the second platform's app
The generated code is short-lived; sources disagree on exactly how long, so treat it as minutes and generate a new one if it lapses.
- Add the accessory in the second app using the copied code
In Google Home, Alexa or SmartThings, choose to add a Matter device and paste or type the code when asked.
- Name it consistently in both platforms
Each ecosystem keeps its own name, room and automations for the accessory; matching names saves the household confusion later.
The traps
Three more edges worth knowing. Removal is two-sided on the Apple half: Apple keeps Matter pairing records in iCloud Keychain, and its support article points to Settings, General, Matter Accessories as the place they are managed, so if an accessory you removed leaves a lingering record, that list is where to clear it. Each platform holds its own relationship with the accessory, so automations do not cross ecosystems: an Apple Home automation cannot trigger an Alexa routine through the shared device, and each app reports state independently. And the number of ecosystems one accessory can join is finite; the budget is real but the exact count is not something Apple publishes, so add the platforms you use rather than all of them on principle.
Whether to run two platforms at all
For a household split between phone platforms, running Apple Home alongside Google Home or Alexa is often the honest answer rather than a compromise: iPhone owners get the Home app and Siri, everyone else gets the other platform, and the Matter accessories serve both. Each platform wants its own hub for the full experience, and on the Apple side the hub question has its own wrinkles.
Where Apple Home is the better half of the pair: camera recording that is analysed in the house and end-to-end encrypted, an app with no advertising surface, and accessory control that runs locally by architecture. Where it trails: the accessory catalogue is the narrowest of the mainstream platforms and its assistant lags the other two. Frequently asked questions
Can an accessory be in Apple Home and Google Home at the same time?
Yes, if it is a Matter accessory. Multi-admin lets one accessory belong to several ecosystems at once: generate a pairing code from the platform that has it, and add it in the second platform with that code.
Why won't the QR code on the box work in the second app?
Once an accessory has been commissioned, the printed code cannot be reused for sharing. You need a fresh, temporary code generated from the app that already controls the accessory.
Can I share my HomeKit accessories with Alexa or Google Home?
No. A HomeKit-only accessory pairs to a single controller and cannot be exposed out of Apple Home. Only Matter accessories carry across; for HomeKit-only gear the choices are keeping it Apple-only or replacing it with a Matter version.
What happens if I factory reset a shared accessory?
It vanishes from every ecosystem at once and must be re-commissioned in each, using its setup code. For an accessory migrated from HomeKit to Matter, that means the migration-generated code, not the one printed on the box.
Do automations work across ecosystems on a shared accessory?
No. Each platform runs its own automations independently. The accessory is shared; the logic is not.
