The cheapest way into Apple Home with Thread

If your goal is a working Apple Home with Thread for the least money, the answer fits in a sentence: buy a HomePod mini. At A$199 it is the cheapest Apple device in Australia that is both an Apple Home hub and a Thread border router, and because it is also the cheapest hub outright, the Thread capability is free.

That sentence needs writing down because the advice most people get instead, buy the cheap Apple TV, is wrong twice over. We do not sell Apple hardware and cannot, so take this as straight advice with nothing riding on it: here is the range, what each box actually does, and where the money goes.

The range at Australian prices

A home hub is the always-on device that gives an Apple Home remote access, automations, sharing, notifications and, with an iCloud+ plan, camera recording. A Thread border router is the device that joins Thread accessories, the low-power mesh that battery sensors and locks increasingly use, to your network. The catch across Apple's range is that those are two different lists, and one popular device is on only one of them.

The A$299 trap

This is why 'the Apple TV is the cheap Apple hub' fails on both halves: it is not the cheap one, and for Thread it is not a hub that helps. If you were only ever buying it to stream television, none of this matters. If a Thread sensor or lock is anywhere in your plans, it matters a great deal.

When the dearer boxes earn it

The A$399 Apple TV 4K (Wi-Fi + Ethernet) is the right buy when you want one box to do everything: streaming, home hub, Thread and a wired network connection. That Ethernet port is the only wired connection in Apple's range, which also makes it the steadiest hub in a house with patchy Wi-Fi. That is a real reason to spend the extra A$100, beyond the Thread radio.

The HomePod (2nd generation) at A$549 is a speaker first. You buy it for the sound, and the hub and Thread come along as a by-product. It is also the only device in the range with temperature and humidity sensors, which your automations can use.

One secondhand route worth knowing: every Apple TV 4K (2nd generation), the 2021 model, is a Thread border router in every configuration. Apple no longer sells it, so it is only available used; we have not verified secondhand prices and there is no warranty path through us, so treat it as an option rather than a recommendation.

Buy the box elsewhere, then come back

We cannot stock Apple hardware, so buy the hub from Apple or wherever suits. The part we can help with is everything that hangs off it. One honest note there: the accessories we stock today reach Apple Home over Wi-Fi, over Matter, or through the Hue Bridge, and none of them needs Thread. Buy the hub for where your home is going, not for what is on our shelves this month: a HomePod mini bought now is ready the day your first Thread sensor arrives.

A last timing note: the HomePod mini has been on sale unchanged since October 2020, and a refresh has been reported by Bloomberg, though Apple has announced nothing. Apple's September event may move several of these prices at once. We checked every figure on this page on 5 August 2026 and will revisit it after the event.
