Amazon Alexa, August 2026: Alexa+ arrives in Australia

Alexa+ went live in Australia on 5 August as an Early Access programme, and Amazon calls it the first Asia-Pacific launch, after the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, France and Brazil. Worth saying plainly: in June we wrote that Amazon wasn't expected to bring Alexa+ here until 2027. That was the read at the time and it was wrong, by well over a year.

Early Access means invitation, not a switch you can flip. There are two ways in. Buy one of the eligible Echo devices and you can opt in during setup. Already own a compatible one, and you register your interest at amazon.com.au/newalexa and wait, with Amazon saying it will invite thousands of customers over the coming weeks. It costs nothing while Early Access runs. Afterwards it's included for Prime members, and A$29.99 a month for everyone else.

The part that makes this more than a copy-paste launch is the local work. Amazon says engineers, linguists and speech scientists tuned the models for Australian speech rather than adapting the American build, using reinforcement learning, accent-neutral speech representations and regional embeddings to handle the accent. In practice that means it understands servo, bottlo, snags and arvo, and carries local sport and state-rivalry knowledge. Australian services are wired in from day one too, including ABC, News24, The Guardian, AAP and Reuters for news, OpenTable for bookings, Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music and local radio, plus Prime Video, Audible and Ring.
