What iPad do I have?
Find the exact iPad you own from the number on the case or the one buried in Settings, then see which wall mounts are cut for it.
A model number like A2836, a name, a chip or a year. Whatever you know.
Not sure? Open Settings, tap General, then About. Tap the part number beside Model Number and it flips to the A number you want. On older iPads it is also printed on the back of the case.
Type what you know and we'll narrow it down. All 45 iPads are in here.
Find the model number in Settings
This is the quickest route, and it works on every iPad still running. The one step people miss is the last one: the About screen shows a part number where you expect the model number, and you have to tap it.
- Open Settings and tap General
Settings is the grey cog on the home screen. General sits in the list down the left.
- Tap About
About is at the top of the General list. It holds the iPad's name, its software version and its numbers.
- Tap the part number to reveal the model number
Beside Model Number you will see a longer code ending in /A. That is the part number, not the model number. Tap it once and it flips to the model number, which starts with an A and has four digits after it.
Find the model number on the iPad itself
Older iPads have the number printed in fine grey type on the back of the case, under the regulatory text. Newer ones do not print it there at all. Apple's guidance for those is to look inside the USB-C or Lightning connector, on the side facing the screen, in a place with bright light overhead. It is small, and a phone torch helps more than glasses do.
Why one iPad has several model numbers
Apple numbers the Wi-Fi model, the Wi-Fi and cellular model and the China-only cellular model separately, and a few generations add a fourth for the mmWave version. The iPad Pro 11-inch (M4), for example, is A2836, A2837 or A3006 depending on which one you bought. They are one design in three sellable configurations, so the case is identical and any of the three numbers gets you to the same answer.
Telling iPads apart without a number
If the number has worn off and the iPad will not turn on, the physical tells will usually get you close enough to pick from a short list:
- A round home button below the screen means an older body. On most of them the button also reads a fingerprint.
- No home button, even bezels all the way round and no fingerprint reader anywhere means an iPad Pro from 2018 onwards. Those use Face ID.
- No home button but a fingerprint reader built into the top button is the iPad Air from the 4th generation, the iPad mini from the 6th, and the standard iPad from the 10th.
- A front camera centred on the long edge, so it looks at you properly in landscape, is a recent model. Older iPads put it on the short edge.
- The charging port dates it in three steps: a wide 30-pin dock connector to 2012, Lightning after that, and USB-C from the 2018 iPad Pro onwards as each line was redesigned.
Why the exact model matters for a wall mount
A blind wall mount is cut for one body. The tablet drops into a recess with a millimetre or so to spare, which is what makes it look built in rather than stuck on, and it is also what makes the wrong generation fail to close. The name alone will not tell you: there have been six 11-inch iPad Pros, and the 2024 redesign changed the outline from 247.6 by 178.5 mm to 249.7 by 177.5 mm and took the thickness from 5.9 mm down to 5.3 mm. Two iPads sold under nearly the same name, and one bracket will not hold both.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find out which iPad I have?
Open Settings, tap General, then About. Beside Model Number you will see a part number ending in /A. Tap it once and it changes to the model number, which starts with an A. Put that number into the finder above and it will name the exact model.
Where is the model number on an iPad?
On older iPads it is printed in fine type on the back of the case. Newer iPads do not carry it there, and Apple's advice is to look inside the USB-C or Lightning connector, on the side facing the screen, under a bright light.
Why does my iPad have more than one model number?
Apple numbers the Wi-Fi, cellular and China-only versions of the same iPad separately, so one design can carry three or four numbers. The case is the same size in every case, so any of them identifies the same model for the purposes of a mount or a case.
Does the iPad generation matter for a wall mount?
Yes, for a recessed or blind mount it matters entirely. The recess is cut to one set of dimensions and iPads sold under similar names are not the same size. The 11-inch iPad Pro changed both its outline and its thickness in 2024, so a bracket for the earlier body will not take the newer one.
