What is Wi-Fi?
Most smart home devices use Wi-Fi, but not all, and many keep working without the internet. Here is what needs Wi-Fi, what does not, and how to keep your network happy.
Wi-Fi is the one network in this series you already have. It runs your phone, your laptop and your TV, and it is the quickest way to get a smart device online: a Wi-Fi plug or camera connects straight to your router, no hub required. That convenience is why so much smart home gear is Wi-Fi. But it is not the right home for everything, and a good smart home usually mixes Wi-Fi with a quieter, low-power protocol.
How smart devices use Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is the same network your phone and laptop use, and the simplest way to get a smart device online. A Wi-Fi smart plug or camera connects straight to your router, no hub required, and you control it from an app. That convenience is why so much budget smart gear is Wi-Fi. The catch is that Wi-Fi was built for big, fast data like video, not the tiny, constant messages a sensor sends, so it draws more power and takes up a slot on your router.
Where Wi-Fi came from
Wi-Fi is not a smart home invention. It grew out of the IEEE 802.11 standard, first published in 1997, and it took off around 1999 once it was fast enough to be useful and Apple built it into its laptops. The name is a brand, not science: it does not actually stand for anything, and the Wi-Fi Alliance is the body that certifies devices and hands out the version numbers. Those versions have climbed steadily, from Wi-Fi 4 to today's Wi-Fi 7, each one faster than the last.
What Wi-Fi is good at
For the right devices, Wi-Fi is hard to beat.
- No hub to buy. Wi-Fi devices use the router you already own, so there is nothing extra to set up.
- Loads of bandwidth. Wi-Fi is far faster than any low-power protocol, which is why cameras, video doorbells and displays live on it.
Works with everything. Almost every platform speaks Wi-Fi: Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings.
- Cheap and everywhere. Wi-Fi chips are made by the billion, so Wi-Fi gear is usually the most affordable way in.
Where Wi-Fi falls short
The same traits that make Wi-Fi easy make it a poor fit for parts of a smart home.
- It is power-hungry. Wi-Fi draws far more power than Zigbee or Thread, so a battery sensor on Wi-Fi lasts weeks, not years.
- It loads your router. Every Wi-Fi device takes a slot, and a home with dozens of them can start to struggle, especially on the crowded 2.4 GHz band.
- It often leans on the cloud. Many Wi-Fi devices route through the maker's servers, so they can stop working during an outage, or for good if the company shuts the service down.
- No low-power mesh. Wi-Fi was never built for swarms of tiny sensors the way Zigbee and Thread were.
Which devices need Wi-Fi, and which do not
Devices that stream or need lots of bandwidth almost always use Wi-Fi: security cameras, video doorbells, and many smart speakers and displays. Cheap smart plugs and bulbs often use it too, because it is the easiest path to market. But a lot of smart home gear does not touch your Wi-Fi at all. Zigbee, Z-Wave and Thread devices run their own low-power networks through a hub, which is why battery sensors on those protocols last years while a Wi-Fi one would be flat in weeks.
Can a smart home work without Wi-Fi or the internet?
Yes, and this is where the protocol matters. Zigbee, Z-Wave and Thread devices talk to each other and to their hub locally, so lights, sensors and automations keep working even with the internet down. What you lose is remote access, voice assistants and cloud features. Wi-Fi devices are more exposed here: many route through the maker's cloud, so they stop responding when your connection drops. If offline reliability matters, favour local-first protocols and a smart home hub.

How the main smart home connection types compare.

Where Wi-Fi is headed
Wi-Fi keeps getting faster. Wi-Fi 7, the current generation, adds more bandwidth and lower lag, which matters most for the hungriest smart home devices: AI security cameras, high-resolution video and smart displays. It also uses the newer 6 GHz band, though in Australia only part of that band is open, so an imported router may offer fewer channels here than overseas. There is also Wi-Fi HaLow, a long-range, low-power version of Wi-Fi aimed at sensors, but in 2026 it is still mostly industrial and has not reached everyday smart home gear. For the smart home, Wi-Fi's real job is unchanged: it is the network your cameras and displays rely on, and the transport Matter uses for its mains-powered devices.
So do you need Wi-Fi?
You will use Wi-Fi for cameras and the odd plug, but you do not want your whole home on it. Mix Wi-Fi for the bandwidth-hungry devices with a low-power protocol for everything else.

Most home routers handle a few dozen before they struggle. If you are adding lots of sensors, low-power protocols keep them off your Wi-Fi entirely and avoid the load.
Is Wi-Fi or Zigbee better for a smart home?
Wi-Fi is simplest for a few mains-powered devices; Zigbee is better for lots of battery sensors and offline reliability. Many homes use both.
